Sculptural Brooch (with removable stand) inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Chinese fresh water baroque pearl (one piece with multiple nucleus) caterpillar is perched on a repousse gold and sterling silver mushroom. He is smoking a hookah made from another baroque Chinese fresh-water pearl.
The caterpillar, with handlebar moustache and wire-frame eyeglasses and a red gold fez is accented with small demantoid garnet side spots and cognac diamond eyes.
The hookah is surmounted with a ruby fire-bowl. The mushroom is accented with black and grey south sea button keshi pearl mushrooms and tiny Akoya seed pearls spots. It is engraved with the phrase: “Who are you?” on the back (the first question that Carroll’s caterpillar asked Alice, as well as the words “Shorter” and “Taller” indicating which side of the mushroom would make Alice grow or shrink if she ate a piece).
Base is carved crystal quartz “looking glass” lens that allows the mushroom and caterpillar to rotate and rock. The brooch is removable for wearing.
